What is flower? – For humans Flowers the most attractive part of a plant and sometimes sole purpose of growing plant. They looks vibrant fresh and have been associated with warm feeling, to the extent that we have now dedicated flowers to express different kind of emotions.

Flower have been used in our culture from ancient time and they very much part of our life birth to death. Flowers symbolizes love, respect, affection, friendship, devotion, celebration and even condolences,

What Science Says?

Lets look at what science says about flower : Flowers are reproductive units of the plant. The sole purpose of flower is sexual reproduction/making new baby plants.

There is whole lot world science how the plant reproduction works and I am sure we have all gone through them during our school text books once upon a time. We will refresh it at later stage in this course.

Purpose of a Flower?

Flower is a reproductive organ of plant and its primary purpose is to create baby plants. Similar to human and other living being plants too have whole system of organs to produce babyplants. Pollens are male cell and Ovum is female cell. The process of transfer of pollen grains from anthers via wind, insects, water etc. to flower is called Pollination. Fertilization is the process when pollen grains attaches to ovule, resulting in fruits and seeds. 

COMPONENTS OF A FLOWER : Flower is made of 7 different components, each with own defined purpose – Peduncle, Receptacle, Sepal, Petal, Stamen, Anther and Pistil.

Peduncle

Peduncle is the long stalk in the flower.

Receptacle

Receptacle is the part connecting stalk to the flower, slight bulge.

Sepal

Sepal is the outer leaf like structure protecting the bud before it blooms.

Petal

Petal is the most beautiful and colorful parts of a flower. Attracts pollinators bees, butterflies etc.

Stamen

Stamen is the antenna like structure, delicate filament connected to anther ().

Anther

Anthers produce pollens (male cell) grain in flower.

Pistil

Pistil produces the ovule (female cell) producing part of a flower.

The mature ovary is a fruit, and the mature ovule is a seed.

Stigma: The part of the pistil where pollen germinates.
Ovary: The enlarged part of the pistil where ovules are produced.
